Kobe Doin' Porn

Well, this makes me lose a good deal of respect for Spike Lee. This movie strikes me as lame and almost completely without merit.

Spike Lee is best when directly addressing stereotypes (or turning them on their heads). See: Do the Right Thing, Jungle Fever and (the very non-Spike) Inside Man. Here, he is intentionally glossing over the worst type of stereotypical behavior (mysoginistic black athlete superstar cheats on his wife, buys her off with jewelry, uses money/fame to rebrand himself, potentially violent, etc) to rebrand Kobe as a role model of the highest order. The trailer is almost a parody of itself. As if Kobe acts the same while publicly mic'd up and 30 cameras filming him as he does in every other game.

Mike Tyson is not an obvious parallel, but the new documentary about him (which is getting great reviews) explores everything.

Granted, the guy has had the fall, which makes the movie more "interesting," but at least it's honest.
