A new gourmet coffee and sandwich shop opened around the corner from us last week. As someone who eats sandwiches and baked goods at roughly 10 meals during the week, I figured I should try it out. My typical baked goods test is a cookie (chocolate chip or oatmeal rasin). While this might not be everyone’s specialty, it acts as the normalization of the test, so I can put the restaurant (and all of its other baked goods on some kind of baked curve).
Sadly, I was mightily disappointed by the oatmeal rasin offering. After some haranguing from the wife to base my judgment on something else (they had a wide selection of other desserts including rice pudding, tiramisu and Greek pastries), I decided to try out their Azuki Donut with Red Bean filling. It was a good choice. The filling’s consistency was a little thicker than that of a typical jelly/jam donut, with a more mild sweetness. Quite tasty.
